Blog Bites From Two Awesome Comic Writers

Two items of interest on my RSS this morning:

Who says a gay, female, latina superhero can't hit it big in American pop culture? Clue featured in yesterday's New York Times crossword puzzle: "____ Montoya, DC Comics heroine known as the Question." What up!

Writer John Rogers has posted the entire script to his final issue of Blue Beetle, a story which I gave a semi-rare A+ review on both this site and Pop Culture Shock. The script format makes for a tough but interesting read, and it's always neat to see how comic writers communicate ideas to artists. Even without pictures it made me cry all over again.

Film critic J. Hoberman is celebrating his 30th year at the Village Voice, so BAM is showcasing a number of films he memorably reviewed, or just plain liked a lot. Hoberman will introduce this screening of Eraserhead, who called it a "piece of post-nuclear guignol" in his original 1977 review.

Dodgeball may generally be associated with positive memories for geekanerds, but you're all grown up now and surely decades of playing first person shooters have sharpened up your hand eye co-ordination. Registration is $15, which guarantees you at least two games. Winners get two pitches and free Pizza at the Boss Tweed after party. Losers get to feel bad about themselves. The website says it's co-ed, friendly, and 22 and over.

Free jello shots whenever someone says "oceanic 6" or punches Ben. I don't even like Lost, and I know that's awesome. I passed by this place last week, they've got the show on a bunch of huge screens and the volume is cranked, if you're concerned about missing some valuable info in a public setting.

GayGamer.Net Can't Be Stopped

Over the weekend, videogame news blog GayGamer.net was attacked by some homophobic douchebag (or douchebags) who set upon the site with DOS attacks, spammed their message boards with anti-gay crap and eventually caused a server crash. GayGamer.Net is an excellent site for game news and smart, frequently hilarious commentary, but I'd assume that whoever was responsible for the attack probably never bothered to look past the domain name.

As a fan of the site and a gay gamer myself, I'm happy to report that GayGamer is back on it's feet as of noon today. Along with a short post on the details of the crash and aftermath, contributor The Boy Blunder has written a thoughtful post on how discrimination and hatred are dealt with in comic books. He pledges to subscribe to the Charles Xavier methodology of trying to reach out to people who hate those different from themselves. Reach out...with murderous psychic powers. Just kidding. I love peace. Hopefully, the blogosphere coverage of this whole mess will only help to publicize the site and win some new readers.
