Geekanerd Spotter: The Storm Troopers Rock Poster

Saw this in my new home base of San Francisco. August 19th? What a tease. And this band doesn't appear to exist on the internet. WHAT THE HELL. I know Star Wars took place in the past, but this is ridiculous. Clones need to get their shit together and post some MP3s.

If you didn't read the small print at the top, you're missing some brilliant stupid puns.

Geekanerd Spotter: Charlie Brown Car

This is definitely awesome, but if you paint your car to look like Charlie Brown aren't you just asking for a depressing, soul-crushing driving experience?

Spotted near the west side of Prospect Park, Brooklyn.

Geekanerd Spotter: 8-Bit Mario in Paris

Geekanerd Spotter has seen plenty of 8-bit street art, but what makes this mini-mosaic featuring Mario any different? It's French! Fellow blogger and loyal reader Lena was recently in Paris, and snapped these pictures of Mario in his unnatural habit.

I've always said those Parisians had class. Can any old schoolers tell me the name of the white figure Mario is facing off against?

Geekanerd Spotter: Invincibility Star Street Art

This entire condo complex has an invincibility star! Does that mean that the people who live here will never die, as long as they don't leave their rooms? But what kind of life would that be? Actually that may be a scenario all too familiar to both you and me, dear reader.

And speaking of you, regular readers have certainly noticed by know that our posting schedule and regular features have slowed way down recently - a bit of excusifying after the jump...

The slowdown in production is mainly because I, AHR, am residing outside of NYC for the fall, and accordingly my nerd powers are only operating at about half capacity. You see, LIKE SUPERMAN, I draw my powers from a localized source, in my case the Manhattan/Brooklyn area. I'm currently in Charlotte NC, which has at least one amazing comic store, but sadly not as many amazing nerd events to keep me inspired.

That said, the NYC Weekanerd Event Calendar and our Twitter/Facebook feeds still get updated all the time. Geekanerd proper will still be updated with feature articles, though on a slower schedule for the next few months.

If you have any feedback, holla: tips@geekanerdblog.com

Geekanerd Spotter: Potter Villains Take the NYC Subway

Spotted this station-wide Harry Potter ad campaign in the 42nd Street Times Square Subway station. This poster portrays all the baddies in a subway station (meta!), with a train wooshing by behind them. If I saw these guys on the subway, I would definitely follow them because you know a Slytherin party in New York is the place to freakin be. Gryffindor parties are probably just a lot of sitting in a circle on the floor and telling stories about friendship. Slytherin parties have drugs and anonymous sex! And murder!

Geekanerd Spotter: The Batmobile

There's a carwash outside Geekanerd HQ, and today some mofo pulled up in the goddamn
batmobile.
Can you believe this? My god. If it wasn't for social anxiety disorder, I would have run down and gotten the full story from the driver. Let us just assume he's a really, really big Batman fan, and is very confident in his fandom.

Geekanerd Spotter: Game Boy Love

Someone loves their old school Gameboy so much, they just had to leave a declaration in sharpie in the Union Square subway.

Geekanerd Spotter: Animation on the Subway

Okay, so this might qualify as a "spotter", since I've been riding past this thing on the way to work for the past three months. BUT; it's so freaking cool I wanted you all to share in it's glory.

This zoetrope-like art installation was created in the 1970s by filmmaker Bill Brand. It was recently restored to it's full psycadelic glory, after decades of being obscured by grafiti and bad lighting. New York nerds can see it for themselves on the uptown bond B or Q trains, after DeKalb station in Brooklyn.

If comic nerds find this idea a little familiar, it may be because Brian K. Vaughn featured it it Ex Machina; remember? A girl looks out of the window, sees the neat animation, then flips out and dies? This certainly came to MY mind when I noticed the animation for the first time. Was I temporarily afraid for my life? I was.

You can read a recent New York Times article about the piece, if you want more background on the artist.

Geekanerd Spotter: Mexico Edition

Hola pistolas! Greetings from warm and sunny Oaxaca, home of half the AHR family tree. Oaxaca is a great place to relax and ride out the inevitable video game withdrawal, but just like the song says, there is always something there to remind me.

Also of note; no one here seems to care about Dark Knight very much, but the Resident Evil animated movies (??) are HUGE.

Also thought some of you might appriciate this...
This image really confused me. It looks like a legit Disney character design, but who is it? From whence did it come? The combination of dark skinned girl, walrus, and penguin had me thinking...Eskimo Princess? Could this be some sort of Direct to DVD Disney flick available only in Central American markets?

The answer is: no. It's just Young Ariel colored to look Latina. The shell necklace is a giveaway. Inside the book, she's a redhead as per usual. Pretty disappointing, actually.

UPDATE: Okay, so the real explanation is even less interesting. A Gnerd commenter more up on the recent crop of Disney Classics informs us that the girl on the book is actually Ariel's DAUGHTER, who does in fact have black hair on account of her parentage (Eric, anyone?). Still...darker skin color, right? Maybe? Bah.

Geekanerd Spotter: Inappropriate Sleeping Beauty Ad

Yeeah. That doesn't look wholesome to me. Maybe I'm still all perv'ed out from the Anime Fest this weekend, but seriously. That blood red background juxtaposed with the tag line "SEE MORE THAN EVER BEFORE" and the the very unwisely cropped picture..could this be intentionally dodgy? It could be a specifically New York market ad, maybe they decided to go for the somnophiliac market as long as they were posting stuff in the childless land of East Midtown Manhattan.

Geekanerd Spotter: Stormtroopers Take Keyspan Park

Hey did you see The Clone Wars when it opened yesterday? I didn't, making it the first Star Wars movie I haven't seen on opening day since I was born. Ooh, it just looks so bad. But I can't help feeling like I skipped an old friend's birthday party, even if that friend has turned into an infantile cash-monger. Sad.

But on a lighter note, yesterday at the Brooklyn Cyclones game at Keyspan Park, a troupe of Stormtroopers showed up to pass out posters. I love this picture, because the guy on the left looks very self-conscious about being photographed in a nerdy context, the girl in the middle is being a good sport, and the girl on the right is somehow pulling off a "Yeah, I'm holding a Clone Wars mini-poster, you jealous?" look.
Foaming Geek Analysis Moment: I do have to question exactly what sort of troopers these are supposed to be. Given that they're promoting Clone Wars, you'd think they're supposed to be Clone Troopers from the era between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The red guy is clearly a Clone Captain in Phase II armor, you can see the model here. So that checks out. But those other guys are just classic Stormtroopers, who weren't around until after (or at least the very end of) Revenge of the Sith. C'mon Lucasfilm, you couldn't spring for a few more Clone Trooper uniforms, you have to pull those old Halloween costumes out of storage? It never ends.

Thanks to loyal Gnerd reader Lena for sending these pictures in; here's her sister Alison in a classic photo op post with a trooper.

Geekanerd Spotter: Dark Knight Drink Special

Looks like post Dark Knight the Joker has gotten a job as a signmaker in a cheesy Midtown bar. I suppose this speaks to the mainstream penetration of the movie. Or something.

Geekanerd Spotter: The Spirit and Rev Run, Switched at Birth?

Saw this neat three-poster advertisement for The Spirit in East Midtown. Please note the two little posters to the right. Seem....familiar?
Denny Colt and Rev Run both know that all it takes to move product is a black silhouette and a fedora.

Geekanerd Spotter: Johnny 5 Is Alive

This geek graf was spotted at the 59th and Lex subway station. Gift Bot 2007 indeed! I think that Wall-e has put Johnny 5 back into the public consciousness.

Geekanerd Spotter: Can You Help a Jedi Out?

Spotted a guy with this sign on the corner of Waverly Place and Broadway. He said the idea for the sign just came to him one day. I don't know what the street price is on those little crystal things, but I hope he gets it together soon, he let me take this picture and seemed like a nice guy. Though I guess he'd have to be, what with the no fear/anger/hate code.

Geekanerd Spotter: Vampires Behind Bars

Remember those awesome 30 Days of Night poster designs that were released a few weeks ago? They're up and about in NYC. Thank god someone had the sense to put them behind bars, lest these vampires escape and turn Manhattan into an unlivable hell on earth. But I fear they'll only be satisfied with feeding on garbage for so long, and when they start to crave human blood I just hope that gate holds.

Geekanerd Spotter: TMNT Represent

During my recent trip to San Francisco, I saw this sign outside of Faye's Video, one of the Mission District's finer independent video stores/cafes. And not too hipstered out, apparently, to show a little semi-ironic love to the turtles.

The recent TMNT movie was awful, of course, but it's like the sign says - those turtle boys were there for us when we needed them, so true fans have gotta tough it out during these these dark days of soulless computer-generated dreck. Besides, the fight in the rain was kinda cool. *pained sigh*

Geekanerd Spotter: Homer Simpsons As You've Never Seen Him Before

The Simpsons Movie opened just under 72 million last weekend, making it the biggest opening ever for a non-CG animated movie.

That's all very well, but it doesn't erase this image from my mind:

Homer with a human nose. I saw it in a subway station and found it deeply disturbing. Here's a close-up.

Uch...the nose isn't even at the right angle. There are some sick, sick people in this city.

Geekanerd Spotter: We Love Magneto

Out and about in NYC tonight and spotted this sticker proclaiming: We Love Magneto. I really wish there was a counter-culture of young adults who were ideologically allying themselves with the mutant terrorist idol Magneto without considering the ramifications. Oh, to live in a perfect world.
