Impressive Fan Made Trailer for Green Lantern!

I generally tend to shy away from fan-made movie trailers... usually they're little more than cesspools of crappy after-effects work and poorly rendered 3D animation that carry with them the unappealing stench of private geekgasms... But this one genuinely impressed me. It wasn't until a good bit in that I was positive this was just a fan creation and not a slightly under budgeted movie production. User jaronpitts obviously spent alot of time picking the perfect footage to hijack and co-opt for his own sinister purposes. Granted, there are a few effects that don't quite jive with the footage and some of the members of the GL Corps look a bit... fan-made... but overall, you have to give the guy alot of credit. I also have to say, I'm totally down with his choice of Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. I think that's a choice the nerd community could really get behind. You hear that Hollywood?

Tracing the Lineage of Doctor Leo Spaceman

Exhibit A: Doctor Leo Spaceman


I'm sure we're all familiar with Dr. Spaceman, the resident physician/dentist/drug dealer for the employees of 30 Rock. This was the only YouTube video I could find, which is sad because it misses a lot of his best lines, such as:

"Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing where the heart is.

(explaining why his lab coat is covered in blood)

Good stuff. But what creative well did spring such a character? Let's take a look at this 1999 Saturday Night Live sketch, which happens to coincide with Tina Fey's first year as head writer.

I would posit this character is the origin of Doctor Spaceman. HEAR ME OUT. While Bad Doctor is a good bit nastier than the always upbeat Doctor Spaceman, they both share a particularly grandiose way of delivering their extremely absurd lines. It's notable as well that Chris Parnell who portrays Doctor Spaceman plays the patient in the bad doctor sketch, and I'd be really curious to know who came up with the original idea. I'm 99% sure it's Parnell. That man is a genius. You know Lazy Sunday was all him, right? I mean, look at this:



And now look at what Samberg and the other Lonley Island guys came up with with a huge budget, T-Pain, and probably writers.



Not as good. Just not as good.

In conclusion, Chris Parnell is awesome and invented Doctor Spaceman in 1999.

More Watchmen Viral Marketing

Maybe not quite as cool (or convincing) as their previous viral videos, but you have to give them credit for being thorough. It's certainly getting me excited for the movie (though that's a risk, I'm sure). I particularly love the Watchmen universe take on the classic Mtv intro and the fact that Veidt is so full of himself, that he has his own network rank him as cooler than Dr. Manhattan. Viral Weezer Video Just Got More Viral!

Remember that awesome Weezer video for "Pork and Beans"? You know, the one from months back with all the internet celebrities and meme references. Pretty cool, right? But were you thinking, "you know, this thing could be even more viral"... well someone else was too, and they freaking injected the sucker with Ebola! I'm not sure if this is done by a fan, or with help from the band... but there's a ton of new footage... so it's either some insane after effects work and a nerd with too much time on their hands or Weezer decided they could do better. But here I was, once proud that I was able to get about 98% of all the references in the video... well those days are long gone. If anyone out there can name every single reference in this video, then I'll personally take you to a movie, an awkward dinner, and end the evening with an uncomfortable massage!
