Photos: Lightsaber Battle in Washington Square Park

Newmindspace, the nutty funsters behind the recent Wall Street Pillow Fight, were the brains behind Saturday's free-for-all cardboard lightsaber battle. They provided 3,000 florescent tubes to the crowd, plus a bunch of black lights to get the glow action started.

The effect was...okay. The blacklights didn't cover much of the crowd, so you really had to use the unlimited powers of your imagination to believe the cardboard tubes were elegant Jedi weapons. I didn't hear many people making "VMM VMM KSS" sounds effects, so I'm not sure if the whole lightsaber theme really held up.

Still, it's not every day you get to hit strangers with cardboard tubes. More pix after the jump.


Some masochistic individuals (probably siths) got into cardboard boxes and allowed people to go totally apeshit on them. Good times!

Geekanerd Spotter: Inappropriate Sleeping Beauty Ad

Yeeah. That doesn't look wholesome to me. Maybe I'm still all perv'ed out from the Anime Fest this weekend, but seriously. That blood red background juxtaposed with the tag line "SEE MORE THAN EVER BEFORE" and the the very unwisely cropped picture..could this be intentionally dodgy? It could be a specifically New York market ad, maybe they decided to go for the somnophiliac market as long as they were posting stuff in the childless land of East Midtown Manhattan.

This past summer, Fifth Avenue's monolithic cube of an Apple Store hosted Midnight Mix, a series of free in-store dance parties featuring a different DJ each night. It's a pretty smart idea. Hipsters and club kids come out for the novelty. And if you're going to try to get a nerd on to a dancefloor, setting it within a computer store is your best bet.

Last night marked the end of Midnight Mix, with guest DJ Spank Rock. Hit the jump for G'Nerd photo coverage.

A composer and his band of henchmen created a set of wacked-out musical instruments from pieces of a broken down '82 Honda Accord. Now they perform experimental jazz concerts with them. I recommend "Noodles", which sounds a little Ike Parliament Funkadelic's contribution to the PCU soundtrack, if was was composed during the post-apocalypse.
