OMG THERZ A FREE TOY HIDDEN IN UNION SQUARE RIGHT NOW!

Hey New Yorkers! If you go to Union Square RIGHT NOW, you can find a free custom Dunny by a local artist! There's only one, and I'll tell you right now exactly where it is!

There! That's it! Okay, you need more info? Click the pic for the artists website (UPDATE: The Link is fixed. Hell, just go to http://doodlechimp.blogspot.com/2009/01/free-custom-painted-dunny.html). He's promised to make this a monthly thing if anyone takes notice, and I can promise you, if that toy isn't gone by 6pm EST, it's mine!

That said, if any Gnerd readers get it, send us a pic, you lucky bastard.

PS: If you're unfamiliar with what a Dunny is, check our photos from last year's Spooky Halloween Custome Toy Show. One of the organizers of that show is the same artist who customized and hid the toy in Union Square.

UPDATE 3:45pm: This just in via our Facebook Friend Feed: Chris M. of Brooklyn just found it! Here's a picture of Mister Speedy McSmugface with his prize.

World Zombie Day 2008: Zombie Hunter Edition

The Geekanerd staff has attended past Zombie Walks in full undead regalia, but this time we wanted to cover the event from a different angle. So we hired two dashing zombie hunters to cover the event for us.

It cost us a pretty penny (those guys think they can charge anything) but I think the results were worth it.

They twittered us updates, which we'll post along with photos (some of which they took, but most of which we had to snag from the Flickr accounts of nyczombiecrawl, MissMoll, hesterk, and hellzkeeper ...geez, what did we pay these guys for again?)

So...yeah. I guess that's just an occupational hazard when you're in that line of work. I mean...kind of unfortunate it happened on a job they were doing for our site but...I mean, I'm sure they knew the risks. And it's probably how they would have wanted to go. Or maybe not. I'm not sure what the psychology is there. Anyway.

Special thanks to Hellzkeeper for sending us a link to their pictures. If you have any shots of these semi-departed heroes, please send them in so the Zom-Be-Gone name may live on. In a tributey way, not an undead way. You know what I mean.

Geekanerd Spotter: Can You Help a Jedi Out?

Spotted a guy with this sign on the corner of Waverly Place and Broadway. He said the idea for the sign just came to him one day. I don't know what the street price is on those little crystal things, but I hope he gets it together soon, he let me take this picture and seemed like a nice guy. Though I guess he'd have to be, what with the no fear/anger/hate code.

Weekanerd NYC - Star Trek Improv, The Warriors, Super Cheap Comics

Friday, August 17, 2007
Need new Star Trek episodes? FanFic leaving you cold? Check out these fully improvised live episodes based on the Kirk-era series. The critically acclaimed (really?) show originated in Austin, where it's still performed. Visit the NYC Crew's MySpace here.

Friday and Saturday, August 17 & 18, 2007
The Warriors is one of those few cult films that is even better than what you've heard. At least if you like campy machismo, gangs who aspire to Dick Tracy villain levels of visual gimmckery, and fights with baseball bats. If you played the fantastic Rockstar videogame based on the movie, you'll probably appreciate it on a deeply personal level. Superfly is pretty fun too.

Sunday
, August 19, 2007
This giant back-issue sale conntinues, and will peak at a whopping 90% off on Tuesday the 21st. But Sunday will likely be your last chance to get anything good, so grab your Indy fedora and do some comic execvation.

Gridskipper Salutes "Nerdy New York"

From Gridskipper:
"Let's hear it for the nerds of New York, the coolest nerds on the planet. Like everything else in the big city, the intensity of the nerd experience here gets ratcheted up to astronomical levels because of the sheer density of nerds and the unlimited resources available to realize every nerd fantasy. With grassy parks to stage jousting tournaments, exhibition halls to host conventions, and shops to sell the paraphernalia for every nerdy pursuit, the New York nerd is the envy of his nationwide peers."
Aw, shucks. They go on to list 11 "classic New York nerd venues."

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2007
No mere hipster sporting event, this tournie will feature some world-class professional ping pongers defending their titles against the tight-panted upstarts of the Lower East Side's PONG League. This event is set to last till the midnight hour, but arrive early if you want in cause this is Kind of A Big Deal and space is limited.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 2007
Ready for some high concept shenanigans? Organized via this LiveJournal Community, a gang of folks will be attending the Ren Faire in Victorian and Steam-Punk garb, and will participate in the faire as "chrono'naut" time travelers. This. Is. Awesome. Anyone can play along, just join the LJ Community to get the full story and let them know you're coming. And send us pictures!

A composer and his band of henchmen created a set of wacked-out musical instruments from pieces of a broken down '82 Honda Accord. Now they perform experimental jazz concerts with them. Mad science at it's finest! Listen to their mech'ed out jams here. I recommend "Noodles", which sounds a little Ike Parliament Funkadelic's contribution to the PCU soundtrack, if was was composed during the post-apocalypse.

Geekanerd Spotter: We Love Magneto

Out and about in NYC tonight and spotted this sticker proclaiming: We Love Magneto. I really wish there was a counter-culture of young adults who were ideologically allying themselves with the mutant terrorist idol Magneto without considering the ramifications. Oh, to live in a perfect world.
