Jackson Publick Posts Legit, High-Res Season 3 Preview!

Jackson Publick and Quickstop Entertainment just posted a totally official, non-bootlegged version of the Venture Brothers Season 3 Preview that was shown at the New York Comic Con last weekend.

This high quality goodness reveals a better look at younger-versions of The Monarch and Phantom Limb, a glance at Dr. Girlfriend in her new (spoiler alert for lame-os who haven't seen Season 2) Dr. Mrs. Monarch outfit with crown included, and a nice clear version of the G.I parody theme song! SWEETNESS AND LIGHT!

The Venture Brothers Season Three Preview

If you could have had an aerial view of the New York Comic Con exhibition hall just before they opened the doors to the Venture Brothers panel, you would have seen a line that filled the entire hall, coiling around the space like a snake made out of nerds and girls wearing Triana costumes.

The hour-long panel kicked off with exactly what we all wanted to see; a five-minute preview of the achingly anticipated Season Three (coming June 1st! O the pain, the pain of longing!). The preview includes lots of appearances by fanfavey secondary characters, such as Dr. Killinger, Hunter Gatherers, The Pirate Captain, and The Alchemist (maybe it's a stretch to call those last two fan favorites...I like them). Many members of the show's mammoth supporting cast who aren't seen in the preview were confirmed by the panel in the Q&A; clips and quotes are forthcoming, so check back soon.

Comic Preview Ad Libs
Young Avengers Presents: Patriot

Marvel Comics sends us previews all the time for its upcoming books. The only problem is, they come without words so sometimes it's hard for Albo and AHR to figure out what the heck is going on. Lucky for them I am King Johnny, Master of the Educated Guess. So hit the jump with confidence, dear readers, for what follows is more or less what you'll be getting when the book hits the stands.

Click these guys for high-res.
Young Avengers Presents: Patriot hits the stands January 23rd.

Weekanerd NYC: The Orphanage, Bendis and Brubaker, Danny Glover, and Movie Geek Deathmatch

Monday, December 17
The new film by the director of Pan's Labyrinth, this is another children in fantastic metaphysical peril story. Tickets are $18 (cheaper if you're a member of the Museum of the Moving Image, but who is?), and you get the added value of director Jaun Antonio Bayona, writer Sergio G. Sanchez and actress Belen Rueda live and in person.

Bendis & Bru, more screenings and movie trivia, after the jump...

Tuesday, December 18
  • 20% Off Sale
  • All Day @ Jim Hanley's Universe, 4 West 33rd St., Manhattan
New York's only live comic book talk show is celebrating their one year anniversary with some serious NAMES. Comic giants Bendis and Brubaker (gape), along with Casanova scribe Matt Fraction and SNL upstart Bill Hader. Obviously it's sold out, but if you're in it to win it, there will be a limited number of tickets available at the door that'll go on sale at 6pm; get in line early. This is the best comic talk you're going to see round these parts outside of Comic Con, and it's all for five measly bucks.

Wednesday, December 19
Apparently Danny Glover is starring in a new John Sayles movie called Honeydripper. How'd I miss that? This evening will mostly be Glover talking about his career, plus an intro by Sayles, scenes from the movie and a blues guitar performance by Gary Clark Jr. And maybe someone will persuade Glover to say "I'm getting too old for this shit", but probably not. Tickets are $18.

Movie Geek is not so much a show as an off-Broadway phenomenon that will not die. I know, because I've done video work for it's various incarnations for the last, oh, three years? Help me. This newest version takes the form of a movie-trivia game show, and will likely resemble a berserk live-action version of Scene It. Tickets are $15 bucks, but if you participate you stand to win prizes that may or may not be equal in value to $15, so there's that..

Mouse Guard Eye Candy: New Print and Previews

David Petersen, you have sent me into a jealous rage. Just look at this beautiful new artwork that will be included in the German hardback edition of Mouse Guard. Talk about A-Material! Non-German countries, someone's been holding on us...

On his blog, Petersen says inspiration came from the Bilbo's Birthday scenes in LOTR, but I am reminded first and foremost of those wonderful banquet passages from the Redwall series, that would reliably appear in the third or fourth chapter of every book (Redwall is now a graphic novel as well, bringing the Mice with Swords comic count to a whopping three).

For even more Mouse Guard fun, check out the new seven preview pages of Winter 1152 Issue #2. Wind in the Willows fans rejoyce....weasels are on their way.

7-Minute Dark Knight Prologue to Screen With I Am Legend IMAX

It's well known by now that The Dark Knight will be shooting four action sequences on IMAX cameras, and now word comes down that there will be a DK "prologue" featuring The Joker showing before the IMAX screenings of the Will Smith post-apocalypflick I Am Legend. When did IMAX become the next big thing?

Mouseguard 1152: Who's Gonna Die?!

Yesterday we posted a link to IGN's preview of Mouse Guard 2: Winter 1152 #1. IGN's write-up includes the cryptic phrase, "It's a winter not every Guard may survive." This would coincide with something author David Petersen told me way back in March, during the New York Comic Con - "I can't promise everyone's gonna survive this time." Eek! He wouldn't really kill one of our three heroes, would he? Surely it will be Sadie, the girl-mouse who the IGN preview indicates will become a more important player in the second series. Important enough....to die?

*cold wind blows*

But I don't want Sadie to die either, as she's the strongest and coolest of the two female characters in the book. Let's hope Winter 1152 doesn't yield another case of women-mice in refrigerators.

In other David Petersen news, fans should check out his new blog where he posts tons of never-before-seen original artwork, both from Mouse Guard and his personal collection, such as this awesome Han and Chewie watercolor.

Finally, after the jump, check out the super-short video interview I did with David Petersen where he drops the aforementioned death-quote, plus a few other tidbits of info on the second series of Mouse Guard.

The Mouse Guard segment starts at 1:19...the interview was part of the late great Pulp Secret Report.

Sneak Peek at Mouse Guard 2

IGN has some scans from the upcoming second book in the Mouse Guard epic, Winter 1152. They are, unsuprisingly, drop dead gorgeous. Please check them out at IGN. The first issue hits stores next week. Oh, and if you haven't read the first Mouse Guard book, you have to buy it right now. It's one of the most beautiful graphic novels you'll ever read, hands down bar none without a doubt insert cliche here. But seriously folks.
